FEBRUARY 5, 1865
Don’t you feel like crying while looking at this photo? Look at his early aging, grief on face & the feeble smile. What did he get in personal life ? Not much. He had to deal with death of mother at an age of nine, strained relationship with father, premature death of two sons (one more was to die later), erratic behavior of wife Mary, burden of office during four years of civil war and witness of death of more than six hundred thousand countrymen in the war. And what did he give to the
world? Undoubtedly too much. Apart from removing slavery from USA, his
biggest contribution has been the establishment of fact that division of
country is not negotiable. He laid the foundation of a truly united USA. |
